Registration and Textbooks

Content

As an online student, you will be registered for your courses each term based on your Program of Study. Your Program of Study will follow the prescribed course sequence unless otherwise approved by your Academic Advisor. If there are any holds on your account (for issues such as unpaid fees, plagiarism quiz not passed, or other unmet requirements), you will not be registered.

Holds on your account are communicated in MyOnline. It is important that you resolve all holds immediately so course registration is not affected. Any student not registered for courses until after the first confirming deadline will incur a late registration fee of $50.

Each term, students are enrolled in classes and the finance team creates an email statement for how to confirm classes. Students will receive the statement via BU email. Once alerted, you must log in to MyOnline to confirm course registration, order your textbooks, and pay your semester bill as applicable to confirm your classes.

Required textbooks will be available through the Bradley Bookstore. Once textbooks for upcoming classes are confirmed and ready for purchase, Student Support will email students, typically four weeks before each start date. To order textbooks through the Bradley Bookstore, click on the Order Textbooks Online from Bradley Bookstore link under the Schedule tab in MyOnline. Acceptable payments include Visa, Mastercard, American Express, your Bradley Student ID card with cash loaded on it, and Barnes & Noble gift cards. Textbooks are typically shipped within five business days.

At the discretion of the instructor, additional course materials may be required once the course is available on Canvas. Students are responsible for the cost of all course materials. Please plan carefully to ensure you have all required materials by the time each course begins.

Reasonable Accommodations for Students with Disabilities

Content

The Office of Student Access Services (SAS) provides services to meet the individual needs of students with disabilities. Based on a student’s documented disability, the SAS works with the student and collaborates with faculty to ensure reasonable and appropriate accommodations and adjustments are provided.

To request accommodations from the university, the student must complete the following steps in the registration process:

  1. Document your disability. Provide us with diagnostic documentation about your disability and send the completed paperwork to our office via fax at 309-677-3685 or by mail to the SAS, Heitz Hall 100, 1501 W Bradley Ave., Peoria, IL 61625.
  2. Complete a Request for Disability Services and Accommodations Form. This helps us understand your strengths and challenges as a learner. This form is where you request the accommodations you need for access to programs, services, or activities.
  3. Contact our office. Please call our office to set up an intake interview with your disability coordinator. During this meeting, your coordinator will determine your eligibility for services and identify appropriate academic accommodations. For students enrolled in online programs, this meeting can be conducted by phone or Skype.

Until all steps of the registration process have been completed, the student will be considered pending and will not be eligible for services or accommodations. Incomplete files will be kept for one semester and then destroyed. The student may, however, begin the process again at any time.

The SAS is open Monday – Friday, from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. and can be reached at 309-677-3654. You can fax information to 309-677-3685.

Online Resource Tips for Success

Content

One of the benefits of online learning is the flexibility to study and work around work, social, and family events. However, along with freedom and flexibility comes responsibility. Since your class and study time are not scheduled per se, you will need to be more self-motivated and self-disciplined than traditional learners.

Here are a few suggestions on becoming a successful online learner:

Summary
Learn to manage your time.
Main Content
Time management is the biggest factor affecting your success in online learning. Figure out the amount of time you need to set aside for attending class and studying each week. Keep a planner that plots out the times you should be online and when your assignments are due.
Summary
Find a good study environment.
Main Content
This is a personal preference. Some people like background noise when they study while others concentrate better with complete silence. Just make sure you can have blocks of time that are distraction free. This may mean leaving your home to study in a library or coffee shop.
Summary
Maintain life balance.
Main Content
Going to school, especially in an accelerated program, will most likely require you to use much of your free time. In order to maintain your motivation, it is essential that you take some time to relax and wind-down.
Summary
Be willing to speak up if problems arise.
Main Content
Since the pace of your online courses is fast, it is imperative that you seek clarification and address issues immediately to keep from falling behind. Your Course Instructors, Academic Advisor, Student Support Coach, and Technical Support Representatives are excellent resources that you can and should rely upon.
Summary
Finally, remember that you get what you give.
Main Content
The more you contribute and participate in your online class, the more likely you are to succeed in your program of study and beyond. I hope you will carefully consider these suggestions and refer to them from time to time as you progress in your program of study.

Tips for SUCCESS: Academic Writing

Content
Academic writing requires us to reflect not only on what we say, but also on how we say it. Ultimately, academic writing requires us to be clear and succinct, while also maintaining academic rigor. Instructors will monitor communications in your courses.
Summary
Proper language.
Main Content
Typos, spelling errors, incomplete sentences, slang, and colloquial expressions are not acceptable for academic discussions. Be sure to check your syntax and your spelling before submitting any posts. Avoid typing in all caps; this may be considered rude and insulting.
Summary
Precision.
Main Content
Provide clear examples of what you mean to say and read your sentences aloud to ensure they make sense before posting them.
Summary
Avoid emoticons and “texting.”
Main Content
Do not use emojis or symbols in your sentences. Avoid writing as if you were "texting."
Summary
Clarity and justification.
Main Content
Say more with fewer words. Provide a logical pattern that justifies what you write. Simply copying sentences from a paper or textbook is not enough, and neither is paraphrasing what you read. You are required to expand on what you read by explaining it in a way that conveys your understanding.
Summary
Own your emotions and language.
Main Content

It is possible that you may be misunderstood. If you must clarify your posts, use educated and toned-down language. Avoid offensive interactions.

If tension occurs, apologize, and offer clarification. Seek for a different perspective, and always avoid inflammatory or derogatory language.

Summary
Respect diversity.
Main Content
In graduate programs, we profess inclusion of diversity and acceptance of each person’s individuality and human dignity. The complexity of plural backgrounds can provide a challenge when communicating. If this happens, use civility and respect and seek for conciliatory understanding. Attacking peers on discussions is not acceptable and will be subject to disciplinary action.
Summary
Control your temper.
Main Content
Being personally offended by someone’s post is possible. If this happens, ask for clarification. Practice I-statements indicating how what was stated made you feel. Do not let your anger or your hatred take control of your reactions. Take time to think about how best to let the other person know how their post may be improved. This is the goal of educated communication.
Summary
Write seriously.
Main Content
Take your contributions seriously. You are expected to reflect on assigned readings and other materials before you make your contributions. Be clear and objective about what you write, and always remember to cite your sources. This is the essence of academic integrity: to not present other’s ideas as one’s own.
Summary
Credibility.
Main Content
Fact check what you read and always strive to seek primary sources. Avoid using literature that is not peer reviewed to justify what you write. Popular websites and blogs are not acceptable sources. Make sure you cite all sources as needed.
Summary
Privacy.
Main Content
When using examples of life experiences to illustrate comments, be careful not to share intimate information about yourself or someone else. Everyone is entitled to privacy.
Summary
Confidentiality.
Main Content
Any information shared in discussion forums is expected to be kept confidential. However, if personal disclosures suggest the need for professional counseling or help, your instructor will reach out to you to make this recommendation.
Summary
Resolving conflict.
Main Content
Communications that are offensive, invite conflict, or distract from the learning objectives of this course will be subject to disciplinary resolution covered by university and/or departmental policies.
