Biography

Dr. Greenwood is a Licensed Professional Counselor with a PhD in Counselor Education and Supervision. His experience is in both school and clinical settings, including behavioral/alternative schools, public schools, and private practice. He has worked in the school system for roughly four years and private practice for Seven years. He has experience working with both children and adults, while helping clients with various needs and goals that range from building self-esteem to marriage therapy, and trauma. He continues to practice counseling and specializes in working with people who have experienced trauma - from individuals who have experienced human trafficking to escaping a cult.

Dr. Greenwood would describe himself as an Adlerian counselor, first and foremost. However, he also integrates humanistic, Gestalt, Play Therapy, Sand tray therapy, and other techniques into sessions. He believes there is no “one-size-fits-all approach” and adapts his approach based on the client’s needs. He also enjoys integrating humor into the session based on therapeutic relationships. Humor in counseling may be surprising for new clients to hear. However, when a strong therapeutic relationship is built, our natural personalities come forward. This approach is also incorporated in his teaching role as well.

Dr. Greenwood’s primary teaching experience surrounds working in residencies and fieldwork (practicum and internship). However, he has taught other classes such as diagnosis, trauma, couples and family, psychopathology and many more. His philosophy in the classroom is that it is important to incorporate insight from learned experiences, research-based information, and preparing students to be the best clinician that they can be. He believes that a student should have a voice in the classroom, and he strives to create an environment where his students feel welcome to share their thoughts. He believes that it is his purpose to serve others, and teaching is a way to be able to reach more clients by proxy through the students he teaches.

Dr. Greenwood is interested in researching trauma related topics and how we can best treat individuals who’ve experienced trauma. His dissertation in his doctoral program focused on the topic of Learned helplessness and complex trauma. Another interest of his is researching the effects of Cults on survivors in efforts to gain understanding as well as insight for those serving this population. He is currently doing research on Cults.
