Biography
Emily Hamuka is a Speech Language Pathologist (SLP) specializing in language and literacy. She began her career in the North Carolina public schools and also worked in the private practice and pediatric outpatients settings. In 2013 she joined the clinical faculty at UNC Greensboro. She educated and trained graduate students at a local charter school and began teaching on campus. In 2021 she moved to the UNCG Speech and Hearing Center where she served patients in innovative ways. Not only did she see weekly patients in the clinic with graduate students, but she also created a summer camp in collaboration with the Down Syndrome Network of Greater Greensboro and a weekly book club for teens who use AAC Devices in collaboration with Camp Reach. She continued to teach and work clinically with graduate students until 2025 when she joined Bradley University as an Assistant Professor in Residence in the Communication Sciences and Disorders Department.
Teaching
Dr. Hamuka’s teaching philosophy is shaped by her own experiences as a student and a clinician. It follows two central themes: to promote critical thinking through the development of a strong foundational knowledge in the course material and to provide students with active learning experiences. She believes it is her responsibility as a teacher to provide supportive opportunities for students to learn material and begin to understand how the information can be utilized in clinical experiences.
At the graduate level: Beginning Clinical Practicum in Speech-Language Pathology, Advanced Clinical Practicum in Speech-Language Pathology, Clinical Practice I, Advanced Clinical Practice II, Augmentative and Alternative Communication, Special Projects in Communication Sciences and Disorders, and Prevention, Assessment, and Intervention of Communication Disorders: Birth-5.
At the Undergraduate level: Special Projects/Independent Study, Language Development, Language Disorders, Phonetics, Articulation and Phonology, Honors Independent Study and Senior Honors Project.
Scholarship
Dr. Hamuka’s dissertation research focused on narrative language intervention for at-risk students. Her scholarship continues to focus on narrative language intervention in the school setting along with student resilience and sense of belonging.
Service
Dr. Hamuka currently serves as the President of the North Carolina Association of Supervisors in Speech Language Pathology and Audiology. She recently served as a member of the 2025 ASHA Convention Program Committee for Leadership and Professional Practices and Considerations. Dr. Hamuka was also a topic Co-Chair for the 2020 and 2021 ASHA Convention Program Committee for Language and Learning in School-Age Children and Adolescents. In 2017 and 2019, she was a member of the ASHA Convention Program Committee for Language and Learning in School-Age Children and Adolescents.

American Speech-Language Hearing Association Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC-SLP) and North Carolina State Speech Language Pathologist License.
