Finding Purpose: Stephanie Garcia’s Student Story
Stephanie Garcia
Bachelor of Science in Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences
Stephanie Garcia grew up in Colombia before moving to New Jersey at age 10. Driven by a passion for helping others and shaped by what she witnessed in communities facing poverty, she built a career as a registered medical assistant while raising three boys.
Today, she’s pursuing her online Bachelor of Science in Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences from Bradley University — finding the time to expand her knowledge and turn her purpose into impact.
We spoke with Stephanie to discover more about her journey back to education and her experience of the program so far.
What (or who) inspired you to earn your degree?
Five years ago, during the pandemic, my now 10-year-old son was diagnosed with bilateral sensorineural hearing loss. The struggle to get him the help he needed covered by our health insurance plan was no joke. It was then that I knew what I had to do, but I couldn't physically attend school. After doing some research, I found this online program from Bradley, which caught my attention.
I spoke to my sister, parents, kids, and closest friends about going back to school, as I was very nervous and needed some reassurance. Of course, everyone told me I had to do it, and now rather than later. My oldest son's words were, "Come on, mother! I support you all the way! You got this, just do it!", while my 10-year-old just smiled and asked if I was doing it because of him.
Without a doubt, I reached out to Bradley and started the process. I want a change in my life that won’t just benefit me, but my kids too, especially my middle son. I can't wait to be able to help him more as I continue to learn.
How do you feel now compared to before you started your program?
Before starting the program, I was extremely nervous and was actually doubting myself. I was afraid that it would be too much between working full-time and caring for my three boys. There are hard times, but those are just bumps on the road. I now feel pretty confident and capable of finishing strong.
Why did you choose this program over others?
I chose this program over others because of its flexibility with the schedule, as well as it being so comprehensive.
What has the process of earning your degree taught you about yourself?
This process has definitely taught me that I am stronger than I thought. I have learned that I am capable of multitasking and getting everything done while still taking care of everyone and everything at home. I have learned to manage time a bit better, and it's definitely still teaching me to stop doubting myself.
How do you stay motivated while achieving your goals?
My motivation is my kids. I wouldn't be able to do it without my oldest son supporting me and helping me as much as he can. Also, seeing how time is just flying, I keep telling myself that it will be done before I know it.
How has Bradley University shown you support?
My advisor was very helpful from the start, guiding me all the way and answering all my questions. All my professors have been amazing. The communication and involvement are great. I recently had the opportunity to be part of the Student Advisory Council meeting, where I met the Dean as well as other students, and the experience was great.
How will you use your degree, and what impact do you want to have?
My plan is to get my bachelor's degree and continue my education to become a pediatric audiologist. I want to be able to help kids and their parents and give them a little of my personal experience so they can understand why I am doing what I'm doing. I believe we need more pediatric audiologists to make a change.
What advice do you have for future students?
Just do it! Don't doubt yourself. There will be tough times, but you are capable of everything. If I can do it, so can you!
